Include an Executive Summary

Today’s Topic:

Include an Executive Summary

Today I worked on building out the case study for one of my small data science projects. I decided to include an Executive Summary at the top of the case study targeted towards a business executive who is not interested in all of the technical details. It’s a good way to introduce the project at a high-level in a results-oriented and goal-directed way.

Tailored for leadership who prioritize outcomes over intricacies, the executive summary distills the following:

  • Problem

  • Solution

  • Result

  • Importance

From there, the case study transitions into granular details for the professional interested in the technical details. Though modest in scope, this project was pivotal: it fortified the accuracy of a survey data pipeline, ensuring reliable insights for downstream dashboards and reports used by public health officials.

By bridging a business summary with technical depth, even streamlined, low-resource initiatives can yield outsized returns. In data science, it's not always about scale; it's about smart impact that empowers stakeholders across the board.

Productivity Tip:

Try the "One Big Win" strategy to navigate a fast-paced environment. Today, identify one critical task (e.g., finalizing a client pitch or completing a key section of a project) that, if completed, will make the day feel successful. Tackle it first thing in the morning, dedicating 30 distraction-free minutes to it before diving into other demands. This approach ensures you secure a meaningful accomplishment early, boosting momentum for the rest of your busy day.
